Firm History

“Spina Antonio Firm - production of pickled and in oil handmade food” has been working since 1966, more than forty years of  experience and product innovation.
Antonio Spina, commonly called Tonino, head of the Spina family, moved to Turin, in the north of Italy, looking for a job opportunity.
In 1961 he started to work for a firm producing porcini mushrooms (Boletus Edulis).
Tonino’s creativity brought him to dream of a similar firm, specialized in the production of preserved food of his region Apulia, in the south of Italy.
He started transforming the first products in Turin, thanks to his experience and  the support of the firm in Turin that considered him to be a creative employee and not a rival.
In 1966 Tonino decided to open a small workshop in Oria, his mother town in Apulia, that was located in Via Francavilla and run by his sisters.
In the meantime  he continued to work in Turin.
Tonino began to produce porcini mushrooms, but his dream was  the production of local food in oil.
Then he added artichokes, aubergines, peppers, dry tomatoes, and “lampascioni” (small wild onions) to his production: the treasure of Salento.
The production increase brought Tonino to move weekly from Turin to Oria, winning the market in the region of Piedmont.
In 1976 he opened a big production plant in Via Manduria in the town of Oria, characterized by  a large space and many employees.
In that period Spina Handmade food Firm started inventing and producing new products in large amounts, such as the famous Spina’s artichokes.
Thanks to Tonino’s sons (Damiano, Giampiero and Luigi) involvement in the activity, in the last years the handmade production has been strengthening, the product quality has been improving, as well as technology and the new market frontiers have been developing in concordance with the Apulia  tradition, with the old-age taste and flavor.
Our Firm is based on Professionalism and food Safety.
The former involves a continuous updating, professional training, new technologies and respect for the environment.
The latter means genuine and high-quality products in accordance with the HACCP system together with  bacteriological and chemical tests.
Spina’s production satisfies many firms, companies, shops, specialized gastronomy services, restaurants, both in Italy and abroad.
Since 1966 Oria  tradition has not changed as well as our handmade product tradition and taste.
Spina Handmade food Firm is the symbol of the tradition in Salento.
